History of the Squires

In September 1991, a group of individuals decided to go to the Island of Gran Canaria to play golf. The trip was organised for the end of October. The group comprised of the following:

Bill Lloyd
Barry O'Connor
Jim Broe
Tom Scollan
Alan Long
Vincent McGuirl
Niall Clarke
Tommy Mooney

Frank Murray joined the group midweek.

Following a week of very successful golf and enjoyment it was decided to hold the presentation in one of the local hostelries in Puerto Rico. The winner of the event, i.e. the person who had accumulated the most points over the three days, was Tommy Mooney.

During the evenings various discussions arose as to the possibility of making this trip an annual event. This suggestion was unanimously supported and further discussions took place as to the viability of forming a Golf Society, the purpose of which to play a number of outings prior to the proposed "away trip" for 1992. It was decided to expand the group from 9 to 12 and the following people were approached to join the newly formed society:

John McCrystal Cathal Macarthy
Aubrey Steedman

The next issue to be decided on was the all important name of the society. In a moment of inspiration, Frank Murray drew our attention to the name of the bar we were at, and the society was duly christened "The Squires".

As Tommy Mooney was the overall winner on the trip, it was proposed that he be made the first Captain and preside over the 1992 season. It was proposed and agreed that the winner of the "away trip" each year would be the Captain for the following year.

On arriving back in Ireland, the Society was registered with the G.U.I. and as there were twelve members the flag of the European Union, i.e. 12 stars was adopted as the logo for the society.

The society remained at twelve people for three years. It was then decided to expand to thirty, and subsequently the upper limit on the number of participants was removed. In 1995 a decision was taken to elect the Captain at the AGM and this remains the practice to date.
